What is MTSS

What is MTSS?

MTSS is a proactive, schoolwide framework designed to ensure students receive the right support at the right time.

At Odyssey, MTSS brings together high-quality core instruction, Universal Screening, Multiple Measures, Evidence-Based Intervention, Progress Monitoring, and collaborative decision-making to support student growth.

MTSS supports the whole student and may address academic, behavioral/social-emotional, and attendance-related needs.

The MTSS Process at Odyssey

Odyssey uses a continuous process to identify student needs, provide targeted support, monitor response, and adjust support based on evidence.

Infographic titled “The MTSS Process at Odyssey” illustrating a continuous five-step cycle: Universal Screening identifies potential student needs; Student Identification uses multiple data sources to determine support; Intervention Planning selects evidence-based interventions; Progress Monitoring tracks student response; and MTSS Team Data Review evaluates results and adjusts support. Arrows connect each step, with a looping arrow emphasizing that the process is ongoing and responsive to student needs.

The MTSS process is continuous. Student data is reviewed regularly so support can be adjusted as needs change.

What are the Tiers?

All students are part of MTSS. The tiers describe the level of support a student receives—not the student. Students continue to participate in high-quality Tier 1 instruction while receiving Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention.

Infographic illustrating the three tiers of support within Odyssey’s MTSS framework. Tier 1, High-Quality Core Instruction, provides differentiated classroom instruction for all students. Tier 2, Targeted Intervention, provides additional evidence-based support for students with identified skill needs. Tier 3, Intensive Intervention, provides more individualized support based on student needs and progress. A three-level pyramid shows that all students receive Tier 1 instruction, while some receive Tier 2 and fewer receive Tier 3. Students continue participating in Tier 1 instruction while receiving additional interventions.

How are MTSS Decisions Made?

The MTSS Team considers multiple measures when making decisions. No single assessment or data point determines whether a student receives, changes, or exits support.

Infographic explaining how MTSS decisions are made at Odyssey using four sources of information: Universal Screening, including NWEA MAP Growth results; Classroom Evidence, including student work and assessments; Progress Monitoring, showing how students respond to support; and Teacher and Team Input, reflecting educators’ knowledge of each student. All four sources inform the MTSS Team Review, where educators collaboratively determine appropriate student supports. No single assessment or data point determines an MTSS decision. Decisions are based on multiple measures, team discussion, and individual student needs.

Progress Monitoring and Review

Students receiving targeted intervention are monitored regularly to determine whether the intervention is producing the intended response. The MTSS Team reviews Progress Monitoring data alongside other evidence to determine appropriate next steps.

Infographic illustrating Odyssey’s continuous five-step MTSS progress monitoring cycle. Intervention Plan: Establish a clear student goal and select an evidence-based intervention. Progress Monitoring: Collect data regularly to measure student growth. Data Review: The MTSS Team examines progress monitoring results alongside other evidence. Adjust Support: Modify interventions based on student response. Monitor Again: Continue tracking progress and repeat the cycle as needed. Arrows connect the five steps and loop back to the beginning, emphasizing ongoing evaluation and adjustments to ensure students receive appropriate support.

How Will I Know How My Child is Doing?

If your child is receiving MTSS intervention, progress information will be shared with families each trimester. These updates will help you understand the area being supported, how your child is progressing, and any next steps for continued support.

Families are also encouraged to reach out to our MTSS Coordinator, Kristen Cleasby-Gayle with questions, concerns, or information that may help the MTSS Team better support their child.

Families receive updates each trimester that include four key areas: What We're Working On, identifying the student's area of need and intervention; How Your Child Is Progressing, sharing progress monitoring information; Trimester Update, communicating results with families; and Next Steps, explaining whether support will continue, be adjusted, or change. Families are encouraged to contact their child's teacher or MTSS Team with questions, concerns, or information to help support their child's learning.
